Digital ISPS safety course for the Port of Oslo

In a port, a lot happens at once — ships, trailers, trucks, ropes and cranes in motion pose a safety risk to all the people in the port area. Therefore, everyone who is going to enter the port must go through a basic security course according to the International ISPS Code.

Ensuring ISPS compliance is a time-consuming and manual process for many ports around the world. To save time and resources, the ports of Oslo, Kristiansand and Stavanger challenged us to develop a simple, automated and cost-effective way to ensure that all visitors to the ports have passed an ISPS course.

We took up the task, and decided to solve it with so-called low code tools (“low code”), which make it possible to set up digital services much faster than by programming everything from scratch.

We hired a professional videographer to record course videos in our office, drew up illustrations of typical scenarios that might play out in the harbor area, and created a set of questions that course participants must answer correctly in order to progress in the course.

Using a digital course platform, we made the course available online. Finally, we set up tools such as Airtable and Zapier to automate processes and data flows so that course certificates are sent out automatically and dockworkers get an up-to-date overview of all the people who have passed the course and can thus be given access to the port area.

Result: 3000+ course certificates sent out

The result of the delivery is live on ispskurs.no, and at the time of writing, over 3000 people have completed the course. For the ports that were our customer, the course has solved a problem and drastically streamlined a set of processes that were previously done manually.
